The Alumni Office has learned of a possible misuse of alumni contact information that may have been obtained from the school's Alumni Portal web site. The Alumni Office takes data security and privacy matters very seriously, and has temporarily disabled access to all contact information in the Alumni Portal pending an investigation and our implementing any necessary corrective measures to prevent further misuse. The Alumni Office apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. The Alumni Office has always been concerned about the privacy of our school's alumni and their contact information, and this office follows very carefully defined privacy and security related policies and procedures. Since its inception the Alumni Portal service has contained mechanisms to secure data and provide all alumni with the choice to keep their email contact information private if they so wish. It preliminarily appears that contact information that was marked private by the owner of that information was not accessed or harvested. Only the contact information of alumni who specifically agreed to make their email address visible to other alumni might have their contact information harvested and possibly misused.

While we are still reviewing various logs and other evidence, it also preliminarily appears that the data was harvested only by alumni. While the purpose of the Alumni Portal service is to enable alumni to obtain email addresses and communicate with one another, the use by alumni who appear to have harvested information to send bulk email that appears to not be in compliance with the Can-Spam Act of 2003 and other laws is a grave concern to the Alumni Office. These matters are being fully investigated and we will take appropriate, lawful and necessary steps as we work to get the Alumni Portal service back in operation and prevent future misuse.
